Your car, your pace
Namibia self-drive tours, planned around you
Few countries are as made for a road trip as Namibia: long empty roads, huge views and lodges waiting at the end of each day. We plan the route, book the car and every night, and stay a WhatsApp message away while you drive.

What we arrange
Everything except the driving
A good self-drive is mostly planning: realistic driving days, the right vehicle and lodges in the right places. That part is our job.
Your route
Built from your wish list, with driving days that leave time to enjoy where you're staying.
The right vehicle
A 4x4 with rooftop tents for camping, or a 4x4 or SUV for a lodge-based trip, collected in Windhoek.
Every night booked
Campsites, guest farms or lodges at your budget, with excursions like Sossusvlei at sunrise or an Etosha game drive added where they're worth it.
Notes and support
Day-by-day route notes and our Namibian WhatsApp number, if anything comes up on the road.

Camping or lodges?
Camping self-drive. A fully equipped 4x4 with rooftop tents, fridge and kitchen box. Campsites in Namibia are usually well kept, many with their own private ablutions, and nights under the stars are hard to beat. It's the best value way to travel.
Lodge self-drive. Drive by day, then arrive at a comfortable lodge with a pool and dinner waiting. Most of our self-drive travellers choose this, at anything from good-value guest farms to luxury desert lodges.
You can mix the two, camping in some places and treating yourself to a lodge in others.
A classic first self-drive
Twelve days, Windhoek to Etosha
An example route with comfortable driving days. We adjust it for your dates and interests.
- Day 1
Windhoek
Collect your vehicle after a full handover, then settle in at a lodge just outside the city.
- Days 2–4
Sossusvlei
Drive south-west into the Namib. With three nights you can see the dunes at sunrise without rushing, and rest in the afternoon heat.
Stay at, for example, The Desert Grace or Desert Whisper
- Days 5–6
Swakopmund
A scenic drive through the desert to the coast. Leave the car parked for a day and take a cruise or a Sandwich Harbour 4x4 trip with a local guide.
- Days 7–8
Damaraland
Rock art at Twyfelfontein, desert elephants and wide, empty valleys.
Stay at, for example, Damara Mopane Lodge or Palmwag Lodge
- Days 9–11
Etosha National Park
Drive yourself through the park from waterhole to waterhole, and add a guided game drive with someone who knows where the animals are this week.
Stay at, for example, Etosha Safari Lodge or Etosha King Nehale
- Day 12
Back to Windhoek
Return south on tar roads and drop off your vehicle.
Good to know before you drive
Namibia is an easy country to drive in, as long as you respect the gravel and the distances.
Drive on the left
Namibia drives on the left, like South Africa and the UK.
Mostly gravel
Many roads are gravel. Keep your speed down, especially on corners and loose sand.
Not after dark
Animals cross the roads at night. Plan to arrive before sunset.
Fuel up often
Towns are far apart, so fill up whenever you pass a fuel station.
Distances are big
A short distance on the map can take hours. Our routes allow for that.
Not confident?
Drive part of the way and let a private guide or the shuttle do the rest.
Self-drive questions
Do I need a 4x4 in Namibia?
For most classic routes a 4x4 or a sturdy SUV makes the gravel roads safer and more comfortable, and it's needed for camping trips and some sandy tracks. We'll recommend the right vehicle for your route.
Is self-driving in Namibia safe?
Yes, for confident drivers who take their time. The main risks are speed on gravel and driving after dark, so our routes keep driving days realistic and get you in before sunset.
What driving licence do I need?
Bring your national driving licence, and an International Driving Permit if your licence isn't in English. Check the rental company's requirements, which we'll send you.
How long should a self-drive be?
Twelve to fourteen days is ideal for the classic route. With fewer days, we'd rather cut a region than give you long driving days every day.
What happens if the car breaks down?
The rental company provides roadside support, and you'll have our WhatsApp number too. We'll help you sort it out.
Can I self-drive and still have a guide?
Yes. Many travellers drive themselves but book guided activities, like a sunrise trip into Sossusvlei or a game drive in Etosha.
